Reading this article on DesignWeek regarding the excellent film ‘Graphic Means’, I found it both amusing and scary that so many designers of today will have no idea what designers did before the Mac arrived.

At art school projects were completed by hand with Letraset, paint and even some letterpress as we had a print room at Duncan of Jordanstone, for some reason moved from basement to top floor then hurriedly removed when ceiling below looked like it was about to cave in on the Textiles classes!

It is quite sad when the care and attention paid to choosing a typeface and calculating a layout is mostly missing now as designers jump straight into InDesign or Illustrator and look to see ‘what fits’.

Oh we have it so easy nowadays, I remember when it was all fields!
